The Horn Gallery Petition to Kenyon College

Over the course of the past few weeks, The Horn Gallery Sound Techs have promoted their petition to the Kenyon College administrators to address the specific grievances for their student employment position. In the petition, the Sound Techs explain the purpose of their petition:

“At the end of the Spring 2020 semester, the Horn Gallery Sound Technicians were all laid off without any knowledge or warning. We didn’t learn of our being laid off until this semester; as soon as we did, we arranged a meeting with our faculty management to obtain a better understanding. They apologized, but blamed our lack of knowledge on our last advisor, who has since moved on from working at Kenyon. Another example of poor communication occurred during our first discussion with our new advisor and Laura Kane, when we were informed that plans were being made to move our employment from the Office of Student Engagement to LBIS. Again, we had no knowledge about this decision, nor was there an opportunity for us to give our input about whether or not we wanted to move departments.

In the midst of all of this decision-making, the Horn managers and Sound Techs have been hard at work on creating a virtual platform called The Horn @ Home (hornathome.com) that will provide musical entertainment and a fulfilling social experience to the Kenyon community. The Sound Techs have already lent a hand with video editing, graphic designing, and the general development of the website. We also plan on creating and moderating a Chat feature for every show that goes up on the website; it’s worth noting that there will be upwards of 15 shows (and, thus, 15 chats) for us to moderate. This platform has been impressively built from the ground up and entirely by students. The Sound Techs have already been involved before the website’s initial launch and are continuing to find ways that we can use our skills to optimize this virtual experience. We were denied rehiring on the grounds of there being “no work for us to do,” when in reality, we have already been doing work and there is still plenty for us to accomplish in this virtual setting. “
